Diaries of a Student Nurse: Day 1

Ok, so despite a huge backlog of posts that I need to write about (which i probably won't get around to because I'm going to be one biz-ay beever this summer, I decided I'd write about my most current experience, Clinical Placement.

Day 1:
6AM:
Dear diary. Woke up preemptively. I guess its one of those days where you get excited about something and you just wake up. I went to bed at like 12 AM (actually its more like 1AM since a large wind gust smacked the side of the house and i suddenly remembered i had washing on the line...
I lost several pairs of undies that day and a pair of jeans. May god rest their seams.
8AM
Dear diary, I'm currently on the train. Bought a 14 day travel pass from North Sydney to Liverpool which cost about $24. Not bad actually, makes quite a saving me thinks. Anyway so I'm on the train now and I'm reading through my clinical diaries to make sure i know what im doing... So much i don't know or can't remember from last semester... Actually an entire semester is a long time to wait between learning and actually applying.
8:28AM
OMG, i just got a call from Tom. It turns out that the hospital was expecting all of us at 8AM not 10, as was listed on our placement information sheets. SO MUCH FAIL. its good that i left earlier than i would have. I should probably arrive at around 9:30AM
9:30AM
Wow i must be getting better at the whole ETA thing. Im usually shit.
anyway I'm now wandering around Liverpool hospital looking for my facilitator. Evelyn her name is.
10AM
Well i found her and have been sitting around for a while waiting for the other people on clinical with me. Everyone thought it was 10AM.
Met someone doing the Exercise sport science/Masters of Nursing degree. Gemma. yeah we sat next to each other and made a little small talk. It was a bit awkward.
11AM
finally finished with all the orientation and I'm now on the wards. Its a renal failure ward. I'm on with a girl called... Jachel? i think... god im bad at names. yeah and Tom and a girl called lucy are also on the same ward, but they're on the AM shift. I'm gonna be on the PM shift (starts 1pm) at least for this week.
8:30PM
wow that was a tiring day. I noticed that a lot of the nurses seemed a little dead. Now i understand why. I ended up falling asleep on the train. woke up at redfern, got of at central and changed to the north shore line. Got to north sydney and bought myself a boost and then walked home, not before stopping at EB games and browsing through games for my DS, just to look at titles and stuff.
And thats all for now. I have some studying to do for my clinical placement. Turns out there's preparatory work for each placement. Also need to work out a way of doing more shifts in the three weeks so i can be done with my placement and can move on to my work experience in microbiology.

Level UP!

Hello all.
those of you who know me personally probably would have known that I'm on my L's.
Those of you who know me a bit more personally would know that i've been on them for 2 years
and those of you who know me really well (and i count myself inside this echelon) would know that my L plates expire at midnight (23:59:59) of the 21st of July 2009.
Well,
that is no longer the case, seeing as they expired today at 11am
because i'm now on my P plates!
yay!
now you've been warned that there's another p plater loose on the streets.

nah, i'm not really like that. If anything my driving will be annoying people because of its safe-ness and correct speed limitedness

so yeah, for the past 2 and a half hours i've been doing stuff, then thinking, i got my p's and then smiling to myself for the next 5 mins, in a repeated cycle.

and thats all i really have time for now. gotta go wash some dishes.

TADA!

so now a small break down...
monday is simillar to this semester passed, infact its exactly the same, except its the second semester equivalent subject. Tuesday is simillar Thursday has changed slightly but is still the same in essense. Friday is simmilar as well except i have morning classes instead of one morning and one afternoon. That said... Wednesday is going to be epic. it's pretty much the way my thursday was this passed semester. also thrusday at 11 is going to be a bitch... getting from Carslaw to Nursing in the space of 10 mins or there abouts, is going to be a pain...
So yeah, thats my studying. I will naturally fit in alot of extra curricular stuff around it. But thats for me to know and you to find out :P

Now a note to stalkers, you may if i don't notice you, but if i do. boy are you in trouble :) that and no photos... thats just creepy :s

Just a short bitch

Grr... i hate having to do assignments... what i hate even more is doing them last minute. not because i end up depriving myself of sleep (well maybe a little, after all i do like my sleep), but the fact that no matter how well intentioned i start off... I always manage to procastinate till the last minute and find myself working on it at 1 or 2am in the morning... like i am now.
yes right now, Charles is stooped over several books on Molecular Biology and Genetics, a laptop, and having stepped out of the shower an hour and a half ago (in an effort to wake myself up) and it being winter (i don't care if its still technically autumn... It feels like winter) am quite the cold (en français le froid).
Now im tossing up whether or not to go to sleep till about 6 or 8 (not 7) and continue working in the morning, or to burn the midnight oil and attempt to get it over and done with... right now the former sounds very appealing and quite reasonable. however one does need to take into account that a person deprived of 17 hours sleep, is the equivalent of a person blowing a 0.05 on a BAC (blood alcohol content), thus making said person legally impaired... I don't know why i went off on that normal (if you understand that, you clearly went too far in the study of mathematics :P) me thinks i should go to bed and try to get up later.
so goodnight

Oh and one more thing before i go to bed.

its a bit late but May the Fourth be with you XD

Well, its been a while since i last posted anything... infact its been around 5 months. Now i could try and recap every single thing thats happened to me since the last time I posted but that would take me forever, i would obviously forget some things, and its late (as it usually is when i blog), thus i would like to sleep some time soon. In anycase... i will cover the highlights

Am currently single...
not sure if everyone knows this but i've been single for quite some time since i broke up with Kieran in December. We're still friends and I'm going to her birthday party next week.

Felt murderous anger...
Was in partly in charge of running the Science Revue's O-week stall and opperations at the start of uni (because I'm the Science Revue's Publicity Officer). It all went quite well. Lots of prep went in to it, got plenty out of it and overall it was a good 3 days. The only downer from that entire time was when FILMSoc and TommyT (whoever the hell that is) decided to tag over some of our freshly painted designs, and in effect made it look like they painted it. What we had done was made an attempt at making a 3D floor painting. if you google image search 3d chalk, you'll see what i mean. It was a conical flask containing a Spider-platypus, in foetal position, with a placard next to it saying "we're concoting something funny". It took 1 week's preparation and 2 days to paint the thing.
So when we finished painting and everything was dry, we left. Within an hour of us leaving, some members of FILMSoc, who I don't know the names of, which is probably a good thing for them, because im still angry (I'm a slow burn kind of guy, 3 months on its still smouldering) went into the tunnel and tagged "filmsoc" everywhere, including over the top our design and on the placard where our logo was, making the design look like it was THEIR WORK *rage*.
When i heard about it, i went on a slow spiral into controlled *barely* rage. At first i was like "oh no" because we had just left, and someone had gone over our work. One day had passed and i hadn't seen it yet, and people were telling me it wasn't so bad, so i was ok. The second day of O-week came and i took a break from the stall and went to see it. When i did I was so angry, my mind did some sort of internal silent combustion. I suppose its called me snapping... i was so angry i was shaking from the effort of resisting the urge to go break something, and badly. But being a slow burn kind of person, and a very controlled person, I took a breath and marched over to the FILMSoc stall and let them have a very polite piece of my mind (i am actually very proud that i didn't blow up at them, because the people who were at the stall weren't the ones responsible). Basically told them that i was not happy, in fact incredibly angry, and that they should inform whoever was responsible of that fact.
Anyway the whole issue was sorted out by the Producer, Paul, who ended up speaking to the people responsible when i was out of the stall, and they had been told and came over to defend themselves and apollogise. It was probably a good thing that i was not there because i would have lost it.
all in all it was an interesting time.

Started Nursing...
I've started my nursing courses. They're pretty fun, i'm getting good marks and over all i'm enjoying it very much. There are some things that i will have to do, in this line of work that im a bit apprehensive, reticient or even scared of doing (having to wash someone's genitals when im out on clinical placement is one example), but i think i'll end up overcoming it.

They say bad luck comes in threes...

Lost my wallet on the bus one day. Start of a string of bad luck (which is probably a bias fallacy but i don't care). Loosing wallet = loss of entire life. My identity, credit card and bank card, medicare, membership cards etc, lost alot of time as well due to the cancellation and replacement process. Fourtunately i had taken to wearing my student id in a lanyard around my neck, which formed the basis of my identification from there on.
The next piece of bad luck was when i ate some food that wasn't so fresh anymore, and gave my self some food poisoning. Nothing too serious, just a bit of the runs. Those of you who might know me well, know i have a bit of an iron stomach, and will not throw up, even if i have food poisoning. However if you do see me throw up, either a) that is one hell of a microbe, to be able to make me throw up, or b)there is something seriously wrong, if the urge to throw up is overiding my conscious will to not throw up.
The third and supposedly last piece of bad luck was loosing my phone. left it at frisbee training. However i take that as the last of the three events of bad luck, and as my luck would have it (now that the pattern or bad luck was satisfied) it was found and turned into the gym right next to the field. So i ended up getting it back. Some of my friends who i had told about my string of bad luck, theorised that i still had one more piece of bad luck, and jokingly suggested that i might loose "something else" that very night (note i was talking with purely men and they were hinting that it was to be "bad luck" to loose this particular thing, as opposed to good luck, depending on who was responsible *pointed look*). Oh and i still have yet to replace my drivers license, which i have to do... going out with out one is really hard. I did however manage to get into 4-5 pubs around uni, whilst on a frisbee social (pub golf), without my ID. But the further away from uni you get, the harder it is to get into places, and there's only so much rejection a man can take.

We didn't start the fire... but I did make the smoke
Most recently, I set of a fire alarm in my apartment (oh yes im currently living in an apartment in the city, its a long story that i will not get into) while i was cooking dinner. Most expensive dinner i've ever paid for. The fire alarm issues an automatic distress signal to the fire brigade, which costs the body corporate money, which in turn costs me money. Something like $263.75. So yes, most expensive meal i've ever had... not happy, now im ever so slightly broke.

Thats all that's happened to me so far. In academic news im going pretty well in all my subjects except MBLG. For a little while I almost had no major, but thanks to Chloe, that crisis was averted. I have an epic next 3 weeks for Microbiology because i have an assignment/assessment of some form due each week for the practicals, and because the semseter is beginning to wrap up, lots of stuff is due, or getting assessed, and the ever present threat of exams looms closer and closer.
During the semester break, i'll be going on clinical placement for one of my Nursing courses. I'll be going to Science Revue Camp at the end of semester break, and I hope to probably find a job that will give me some experience in either science (ie microbiology/virology or nursing (as an AIN - assistant in Nursing)

A little Plug
just for those who are interested, The Science Revue this year is going to be called JURASSIC QUARK. The Auditions are starting on the 18th of May and go till the 29th. details will be posted on the science revue website www.sciencerevue.org and anybody interested in auditioning should come along, because its heaps of fun and a great experience.

Well thats all from me. I guess I'm still making massive blog posts... really should post more often to avoid this, but i think that will just make me go on and on and on for ages about one thing that happened before i blog. *shrug* Oh and I haven't cut my hair since October of last year, so its getting quite long now.

Thanks for reading!
